Airbag Restoration and Interior Repair on Accident-Damaged Cars

Many of the best deals at US auto auctions are vehicles with deployed airbags and interior damage from collisions. These cars are often mechanically sound but need significant cabin restoration before they're road-ready. Here's what the restoration process involves and what it costs.

Understanding the SRS System

The Supplemental Restraint System (SRS) includes more than just the steering wheel airbag. A modern vehicle can have 6-12 airbags: driver front, passenger front, side curtain (left and right), knee airbags, and sometimes rear side airbags. When any of these deploy, the entire SRS system needs professional attention.

What Needs Replacing After Deployment

Airbag modules — Every deployed airbag must be replaced. You cannot refold or repack a deployed airbag. New OEM modules cost $200-$800 each. Quality aftermarket replacements run $100-$400 each.

Airbag control unit (ACU) — The crash sensor module records the deployment event in its memory. Some ACUs can be reset by a specialist; others must be replaced. Replacement cost: $150-$500.

Seatbelt pretensioners — When airbags deploy, seatbelt pretensioners also fire. These must be replaced since they're one-time-use devices. Cost: $80-$200 per belt.

Clock spring — The spiral cable in the steering column that connects the driver airbag often gets damaged during deployment. Replacement: $50-$150.

Interior Components

Airbag deployment damages surrounding panels and trim:

Dashboard — The passenger airbag tears through the dashboard on deployment. A replacement dashboard costs $300-$1,500 depending on the vehicle. Some owners opt for dashboard cover solutions for $100-$300, but this may not pass inspection in all countries.

Steering wheel — Often needs replacing if the driver airbag was in the hub. Cost: $200-$600 for OEM, less for aftermarket.

A-pillar and headliner trim — Curtain airbags tear through these panels. Replacement: $50-$200 per piece.

Seats — Side airbags deploy from the seat bolster. The seat cover and sometimes the frame need repair or replacement.

Total Restoration Cost Estimate

For a typical vehicle with front airbag deployment:

ComponentCost Range
Driver airbag module$150-$500
Passenger airbag module$200-$600
Airbag control unit reset/replace$150-$500
Seatbelt pretensioners (x2)$160-$400
Dashboard$300-$1,500
Steering wheel$200-$600
Clock spring$50-$150
Trim pieces$100-$400
Labor (8-15 hours)$600-$1,500
**Total****$1,910-$6,150**

Is It Worth It?

Often, yes. A vehicle with deployed airbags can sell at auction for 40-60% less than an identical car without deployment. If the mechanical components are undamaged, the math works heavily in your favor. A $20,000 car that sells for $10,000 due to airbag deployment and needs $4,000 in SRS restoration still saves you $6,000.

The key is getting an accurate repair estimate before you bid — which is exactly what our damage assessment service provides.
